2. International Nurses Day - 12 May 2026
On International Nurses Day, we celebrated those who stand at the heart of care. Thank you to our nurses for your compassion, strength and dedication in supporting patients, families and communities.
This year’s theme, ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives’, reminds us that when nurses are supported and valued, lives are transformed.
3. Shining a light on excellence: DAISY Award recognition
We proudly celebrate MHR panel member PN Sylvie Ntsoko Ntaba for receiving a DAISY Award.
The DAISY Award recognises nurses for their exceptional clinical skill, compassion, and dedication. Sylvie, your commitment to excellence truly reflects MHR’s values — we are incredibly proud of you!
We also extend our congratulations to all client staff and panel members who were nominated for or received a DAISY Award. It is truly heartwarming to celebrate these outstanding achievements.

MHR has launched Facebook and Instagram pages to strengthen our brand and engagement. These platforms will be used to:
- Share recruitment opportunities
- Provide updates
- Celebrate achievements
- Showcase our impact
As we grow our online presence, we encourage all clients and panel members to follow our pages, engage with our posts, and share our content within your networks. Please see the links below.
Your support plays an important role in helping us build a strong, authentic, and visible digital presence.
5. How tax calculations work when working for multiple agencies
For panel members who work for more than one agency (or have another permanent job), SARS will combine all your earnings and assess the total as one annual income. This combined income is taxed according to the standard tax tables (higher total earnings can result in a higher tax rate).
At year-end, SARS will compare the total tax payable on your combined income with the tax already deducted during the year.
- If there is a shortfall (too little tax paid overall), you will need to pay the difference.
- If there is an overpayment, you will receive a refund.
Example: If you earned R15,000 from one agency and R8,000 through another agency, SARS would calculate tax on the total of R23,000, which may result in an additional tax liability at the end of the year.
6. Basic Life Support (BLS) competency is important
All locum Emergency Centre doctors, as well as temporary nursing and clinical emergency medical services panel members, must be competent in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Please ensure that you complete BLS training, which is offered at a minimal cost of R350. You can contact your nearest MHR Office or reach out to your MHR Clinical Facilitator using the email addresses below for more information.
- MHR Central (Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Northern Cape): clinical.central@mhr.co.za
- MHR North (Gauteng, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and North West): clinical.north@mhr.co.za
- MHR Western Cape (All Western and Southern Cape locations): clinical.wc@mhr.co.za
If you have completed BLS training, please email your certificate to the MHR Admin team. Refer to section 17 below for the email addresses of the regional admin offices.
7. Attend scheduled BLS classes
We are committed to addressing the training needs of panel members at our national locations. As previously mentioned, Basic Life Support (BLS) competency is essential. Therefore, we encourage all panel members to attend the scheduled BLS classes after confirming your attendance. Our instructors dedicate their time to leading these classes and preparing the necessary training materials.
If you are unable to attend the training, make sure to cancel at least 24 hours in advance. Please note that if you fail to attend without cancelling in advance, a cancellation fee of R350 will be charged.
8. Patient safety always comes first - exceeding hours' notice
Patient safety is our top priority. Fatigue can lead to incidents that may harm patients; therefore, MHR urges you not to work double shifts or exceed the hours specified in the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (Act No. 75 of 1997):
- MHR Employees: 230 hours/month
- Moonlighters: 48 hours/month
NB: Remember to notify MHR if you are no longer a Moonlighter (permanently employed elsewhere) or have become a permanent employee.
Thank you for your commitment to patient safety and ensuring you do not exceed the allowable hours.
9. Scope of practice - healthcare professionals
Each healthcare professional must work within their scope of practice as defined by their regulatory council (e.g. SANC, HPCSA, SAPC). Please remember:
- Know your scope – ensure you are familiar with the scope of practice for your profession (available from your professional council’s website or guidelines).
- Do not exceed your scope – if a client asks you to perform duties outside of your scope, you have the right to refuse politely. In such cases, immediately inform your MHR representative so we can address the matter with the client and prevent any risk to patient safety.
- Consequences – working outside your scope of practice can lead to disciplinary action by MHR and, possibly, by your professional council. Always practise within your competencies and legal scope to ensure safe, compliant care.
Thank you for your commitment to maintaining high professional standards. We appreciate your cooperation in following these guidelines and updates. Working together, we can ensure a safe, compliant and positive environment for both our panel members and the clients and clients’ patients we serve.
10. MHR dress code and name badge protocols
Professional appearance is important. Please follow these guidelines for all shifts:
- Wear your MHR name badge when on duty. If you do not have a name badge, request one from your MHR office and wear a temporary badge in the meantime. (Remember: It is a patient’s right, as per the Patient Rights Charter, to know the identity of the healthcare worker caring for them.)
- Wear the official MHR uniform (as per our dress code policy). If you need a new uniform, contact your nearest MHR office to order one.
- Do not wear a client’s uniform when working an MHR shift unless the client requires you to do so (excluding the client’s permanent staff working additional shifts through MHR)
- Adhere to the MHR Dress Code policy to maintain a professional image. For further details, please refer to our ‘Policies and Documents’ web page, where you can find our ‘Dress code’ policies and uniform documents for clinical and administrative panel members.
13. Cell Phone and tablet usage (on duty)
Using personal devices while on duty can impact professionalism and patient safety. Please follow these guidelines for cell phone/tablet use during shifts:
- Adhere to facility rules – follow any specific hospital or clinic policies and procedures regarding personal device use.
- Keep devices silent – set phones and tablets to silent or vibrate mode to avoid disturbing patients and colleagues.
- Limit use to breaks or emergencies – use personal devices only during your breaks or for urgent matters. Avoid personal calls, texting or browsing in patient care areas.
- Protect privacy – never capture or share patient information, photos or videos on your personal device. Always maintain confidentiality and respect privacy regulations.
14. Professional licence renewal (HPCSA/SAPC)
If you are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) or the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), please ensure that your annual practice licence is current and updated on your MHR profile.
You can upload your renewed licence via the MHR4me app or send it to your regional MHR office for updating.
Keeping these credentials up to date is essential for compliance and to avoid being unable to work shifts through MHR due to lapsed registration.
